Meet the Committee
Northamptonshire County Women's Hockey Association
President - I started playing hockey when I was 11 years old and was hugely inspired by my PE teacher, Sally Hallett who played for Northampton Ladies H.C at the time. I played mixed hockey with a local club when I was 13 and then joined Northampton Ladies a few years later. I played for the Midlands U21s, England U21s and the British Police in my younger years before playing for England Lady Masters in my later years! During my hockey career I captained Kettering Ladies when we won the National Plate at the National Stadium in Milton Keynes. I have played for Wildcatz and Earls Barton and although I have officially retired from playing, I still enjoy all aspects of hockey and am actively involved coaching hockey in my role as a PE teacher. I have been an active member of the N.C.W.H.A committee since I became Match Secretary in 1991. This was followed with a spell as U21 Manager, a role I was already doing for the Midlands. In 1997, our President Barbara Bean sadly passed away and I took on the role of President. I am so proud to have worked with Barbara and in her honour I established The HasBeans, a county ladies’ veterans team which was hugely successful and were crowned National Vets Champions in 2010. Due to my huge interest in the history of women’s hockey in the County, I have a wonderful collection old County hockey record books. The first book records the details of the inaugural Northants County Women’s hockey team in 1912. All the books contain newspaper cuttings, which share a fascinating insight into the social history of the County and the development of hockey throughout the decades. Over the next few years, I am hoping to share some of the information I have discovered with you on the history pages of this website!
I’m responsible for coordinating the link between members, the Committee and outside agencies, also arranging and coordinating Club and Committee meetings. I update the Teams and Fixtures onto Fixtures Live and include weekly results during the season. I over see the Website and update on a regular basis. Over the years I played for Olney and Earls Barton and also for the County HasBeans. I'm now retired from playing the sport I love due to injury and old age. I took over the role in 2014.
Hon. League Secretary - This is my 19th year as League Secretary. I often wonder what my crime was to deserve such a lengthy sentence!!
Back in the day everything was done by post & landlines. League results & tables were sent out every few weeks by post. Team sheets arrived by post & when they didn’t, Royal Mail got the blame of course. Technology has certainly made things easier but doesn’t come without its problems.
Since my first season as League Secretary (1997-98) many clubs have left the league for various reasons: Cherwell, Overstone, Long Bucky, Lions (previously Missfits & Town), Corby and Rothwell & Desborough.
New clubs to have joined: Rushden & Higham, Earls Barton, Olney, Wildcatz, Oundle and Wootton Wanderers.
The number of teams in the league has fluctuated quite a bit. For three consecutive seasons (2010/11, 11/12 & 12/13) we only had seven teams in each division and played each other three times. This season we have 11 teams in Div.I & 9 teams in Div.II
Hon. Treasurer - My role is to oversee the finances of the Northants County Women's Hockey Association. My first year as Treasurer was the 1995/96 season and how things have changed since then. No computer correspondence in those days, everything was done by post. But thank goodness we have progressed and correspondence is carried out by email and your payments to me made by cheque or by BACS. I collect your club's Midlands Affiliation Fees, your club's Northants County Fees and your club's Northants County League Fees. I also have to collect any fines imposed by the League Secretary for contravention of league rules. This gives me no satisfaction as I know that every penny a club raises is precious to them to use for the betterment of their club.
Hon. Match Secretary - I have held this position since 1997. The role originally combined the managing of the County U21's and Veterans teams that were selected for the Midlands and National County Tournaments. However the U21's tournaments ceased to exist after 2012 and the County Veterans side stopped competing a couple of years ago when Midlands & England Masters squads replaced the Midlands and National Veterans Tournaments. Therefore with my main role evaporating, I now keep track on our County representatives playing in the various age groups of the Midlands and England Masters squads, reporting back at the AGM. I also continue to support the remainder of your County Committee in the hard work that they do throughout the season.
In the past I have held other positions on the NCWHA Committee including Indoor Secretary from 1985 running the Indoor League at Weavers in Wellingborough and managing the Senior and Un21 indoor squads. For 6 years from 1997 I also took on the role of Minute Secretary handing over to Claudia in 2003.
As for my own hockey I played at Northampton Ladies Hockey Club from around 1981 and was honoured to become President of the Ladies Club, taking over from Rosemary Hardie in 1995. The Club celebrated its Centenary in 1997. It then merged with Saints Men's Hockey Club becoming Northampton Saints in 2001. A few years later I became President of the joint Club before stepping down in 2006 when I moved to join Wildcatz Hockey Club where I still play my hockey
Hon. Minutes Secretary I first joined the NCWHA back in 1996 as Hon. Tournament Secretary. My role was to organise the Veterans Tournament, the Clubs Tournament and the U19s Tournament for the County. These were feeders to the Midlands Tournaments; the Regional round being run by nominated counties. Of course, Northants being efficient organisers seemed to be staging a Regional round every year! However, I felt that within Northants we had players who were missing out on tournaments if they didn’t fit into one of these categories. As a result, I introduced the Inter Divisional Tournaments. Those of you who can remember we would have to treck over to Bedford as that was our nearest double astro. We then moved to Wellingborough on two sites – Wrenn and Wellingborough School. After 7 years in the role I took a sidestep and became Minutes Secretary, for all Committee Meetings and the AGM.
I retired from playing the sport a few years ago but still enjoy watching the game.
