  • Grand Masters of Kettering

Posted by Angi Harrell on 7 September 2017

Jan, Mary, Bill and ex players Sherry and John among the medals in Glasgow.

Three members of Kettering Hockey Club travelled to Glasgow recently to compete in the Grand Masters European Cup and Trophy Championships and were joined by past members of the club John Stone and Sherry Shawcross.
The Grand Masters European Cup and Trophy Competition saw 54 teams compete against each other in 2 competitions held over 9 days on 4 pitches from the 19th to the 27th August 2017 in the fabulous city of Glasgow. It was a great experience to be amongst so many “older” hockey players and it was particularly inspiring to have the opportunity to play at the National Hockey Centre in Glasgow which was purpose built for the Commonwealth games in 2014. Over 150 matches were played throughout the week with teams using the Hockey Centre as well as pitches at Clydesdale HC and the University of Strathclyde.

The awesome Bill Greenwood played for the England over 75 team and came away with GOLD having secured four wins and one draw
    (Germany 1 – 0, Holland 3 – 0, Australia 0 – 0, Alliance 4 – 0 and Southern Cross 1 – 0).
John was playing for the LX Men’s over 65 team

Mary Schwier, Sherry Shawcross and Liz Metcalfe played for a team called the LX Ladies and a lot of players have been asking “Who are LX Ladies?” They are a group of over 60s hockey players who have played or trialled for England in the past. They want to continue to play top class hockey and have now formed a club – the LX Ladies HC, which is affiliated to England Hockey as a Touring side. They are a very new club and held their first AGM in 2016 at the end of a very successful season playing in the Masters World Cup in Australia. They began this season playing in Bill Greenwoods fabulous 75+ tournament and in June travelled to an International Tournament in Tilberg, Netherlands. The European Championships helped to round off a fabulous year
As a non-national side they competed for the trophy and were undefeated in their section coming away with the GOLD medal. They then went on to play the three full national sides and managed to beat the Netherlands and Scotland losing out in the final fixture against England. They were needless to say very happy with an unofficial second place overall.
